As cool as ScreenToaster sounds, I found it to be a little cumbersome to use, and think that for free, CamStudio is still the best for creating screencasts, and you don’t have to be online to use Camstudio. http://camstudio.org is where to get it, and it works much like camtasia (which costs $300) only the creators let you have it for nada.
It’s open source software, so it’s continually being updated. I think you’ll find it a great free alternative to the paid screencast software that they don’t even upgrade for free – it always costs you another $150 to get their “latest version” which I think stinks. (but that’s just my humble opinion)
